Day till Relaunch of Pensato

How business can learn from the orchestra. A symphony of insights.

ABOUT PENSATO

Pensato is a concept that was born out of the conviction that art can make an important contribution to the business world, both economically and creatively. What started out as an attempt to support the music ensembles financially, turned out to be a powerful learning experience that takes us into uncharted territory of learning. We discovered that the rehearsals of top-notch orchestras and ensembles represent an unprecedented source of deep learning for management teams. Eavesdropping a rehearsal of a renowned orchestra is always a unique experience.

The focus and dedication of the musicians creates a real momentum. When we say that music is a metaphor it means that music can carry meaning beyond the literal and the tangible. In other words, music is a vehicle that allows us to discover things that we are unable of articulating and knowing otherwise. This may explain the lifting sensation of a rehearsal and the discoveries by participating management teams. What sets Pensato apart from other management education is that the learning is triggered, not transmitted. Learning as it should be!

What we do?

Bring insights through classical music

Experience-based learning

Music as a sense-making language

Connecting business and culture

Let’s face it: Management training is dead. We don’t need another classroom training to cram 180 slides into our heads. What we need is real learning that sparks something from within. Management education goes deeper when it is experience-based. Pensato lets you discover the emotional power of music. That’s the idea, and it works!

Metaphor is the power plant of poetry and music. Music is as a sense-making language, a compelling story that communicates things that are beyond our reach. It is metaphor that most produces knowledge. It can name the unnamable and communicate the unknowable. This is what the Pensato learning concept is all about.

The life of an orchestra is a constant battle between the commercial power of popular culture and being true to the intent of the composer. We believe they represent an opportunity for one another. By partnering businesses with orchestras Pensato creates a relationship that both parties can benefit from.

How it works?

Observe

Learn

Apply

The structure of a Pensato session is fairly simple. Management teams who visit the rehearsals are given an introduction on the metaphor of music and are given a maximum of 5 cues to observe during the rehearsal. During a rehearsal one can witness how preparation, tuning, adaptation and continuous exchange of cues results in good performance. They’ll discover that the orchestra truly is a learning environment.

Next, the participants reflect on how this setting is representative for their working environment. They have seen that an orchestra is not so much different than a business organization. The process of producing a musical product is actually very similar to producing a business product or service to satisfy customers. In fact, there is much that business could learn from the creative processes of musicians – valuable lessons about organization, process, quality, problem solving, teamwork, and collaboration.

All these learning points now can be applied by the participants in their own organizations. A key take-away is that superior corporate functioning is about unity, functioning as a single entity rather than a collection of disparate parts. Companies that can achieve a high degree of unification and integration among their various member parts will enjoy the benefits that result from greater effectiveness and efficiency in achieving their business goals and objectives. This is how Pensato creates real value for its customers.

What is Pensato and what does it aim to achieve?

Pensato is an initiative dedicated to the exploration and appreciation of music through historical performance practices. Its mission is to inspire musicians and audiences by rediscovering the authentic spirit of classical compositions, offering concerts, workshops, and educational resources.

What is the meaning of Pensato?

The term “pensato” originates from Italian and is derived from the verb “pensare,” which means “to think.” In a musical context, it can refer to an idea, thought, or expression that has been carefully considered or reflected upon. It conveys the sense of something deliberate and deeply conceived, aligning with the notion of thoughtful artistry or interpretation, especially in the realm of music and creativity.

The name Pensato symbolizes a commitment to thoughtful exploration, reflection, and authenticity in artistic expression, resonating with the goals of initiatives like www.pensato.org.

In a musical context, “pensato” can also refer to a note written in the score but not meant to be played, representing an implied sound or idea rather than an audible one. This concept is tied to the imaginative or theoretical aspects of music, where the written note serves as a suggestion or guide, existing in the mind of the performer or listener rather than in the physical soundscape.

This nuanced meaning reflects a deeper layer of musical interpretation, emphasizing thoughtfulness, creativity, and the interplay between what is written, what is heard, and what is felt.

What makes Pensato unique?

Pensato merges the art of music with principles of thoughtful leadership and business management, creating a distinctive platform that resonates with both artistic and professional communities. Its uniqueness lies in the following aspects:

1. Strategic Thinking Inspired by “Pensato”

The concept of “pensato” as a note that is written but not played symbolizes the importance of unspoken strategy and vision in business. Pensato encourages leaders and organizations to think beyond the immediate and focus on the underlying ideas that drive long-term success.

2. Historical Insights Applied to Modern Challenges

By exploring historical performance practices, Pensato showcases how lessons from the past can inspire innovation and adaptability in today’s fast-changing business environment. This approach mirrors effective business strategies, where understanding historical context leads to more informed decision-making.

3. Fostering Creativity and Innovation

Pensato emphasizes the interplay between imagination and execution, helping businesses cultivate creative solutions and innovative approaches. Just as in music, the balance between structure and freedom is key to achieving excellence.

4. Collaboration and Leadership Development

Pensato’s model highlights the importance of collaboration, akin to an orchestra where each part contributes to a harmonious whole. This mirrors team dynamics in business, emphasizing leadership that values every contributor while maintaining a clear vision.

5. Bridging Art and Business for Holistic Growth

Pensato integrates the precision and discipline of music with strategic management principles, offering workshops, performances, and educational initiatives that inspire leaders to approach challenges with both analytical rigor and artistic intuition.

6. A Focus on Legacy and Sustainability

Much like historical music traditions, Pensato encourages businesses to consider their legacy and long-term impact. By focusing on sustainable practices and thoughtful innovation, Pensato provides a blueprint for enduring success in both art and business.
